How to Find Your Aesthetic: Romantic Academia

In these times of travel restrictions and tragedy, I often find myself with daydreams of running through meadows of lavender draped in cascading tulle and escaping to a different reality. Many people find comfort in the poetic nature of fantasies such as these. Perhaps you do too? A wave of curiosity swept over me when I first heard of the aesthetic called Romantic Academia. This artistic movement brings literature to life with a hint of romance. While the images and descriptions I found captivated me, and I wanted to bring more of this aesthetic in to my personal style, adding my own touch. There are many different branches of “Academia” aesthetics such as dark academia, light academia, romantic academia, etc. I think we all find ourselves drawn to specific styles, but it’s hard to fit into one aesthetic box. The nice part about it is, you don’ t have to! But finding an aesthetic can help you discover your personal style or find like-minded people. All of the academias involve ideas from classical literature, a passion for knowledge, the pursuit of self-discovery, and different historical focuses. It is important to keep in mind that all cultures are welcome in identifying with the aesthetics regardless your heritage. Also, we should learn from the past and not glorify history that led to the discrimination of marginalized communities. Additionally, aesthetics are meant to be a guide in which can pick and chose from many parts, taking inspiration from the things you resonate with to create your own.

If you like or identify with more than 7 of these, your aesthetic is probably Romantic Academia.

If you don’t know your personal style, one place to start is Pinterest. After making mood boards in various categories ranging form fashion to travel, I began to see consistent themes emerging. The images I posted were moody and romantic, with elements of fantasy and far away places. Check out my Pinterest boards below.

As a singer/songwriter, I incorporate imagery, historical references, and spirituality into my art. My music has also been influenced by a love of travel which has been instilled in me by my family. So, it’s no surprise to me to find myself drawn to this aesthetic. Below is a collection of photos from my own family’s travels and adventures.
