Celebrate Good Times!
I love parties, don't get me wrong, but getting ready for them can be just as fun! My family's most recent event was a dinner party to celebrate my grandma’s 80th birthday, and the birthday of my two great-aunts. I’m always happy when the task assigned to me is something fun and creative. This time I was the lucky one who got to assemble the cheese board and decorate the birthday cake.
I had never put together a cheese board before, so I decided to do it by food catagories. My mom found this awesome cheese board at The Better Cheddar in Kansas City.
First for the cheese- we served herbed goat cheese, gouda, brie, and dill havarti. I arranged them in atternating colors.
Next I added the meats. I rolled some of them and left some of the thicker ones flat.
Then I added fruit- grapes, blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries.
I also sprinkled in handfuls of mixed nuts.
The finishing touch was adding some groupings of herbs around the board to fill in the gaps.
I hope you enjoy the video I put together to show the progression on the cheese board.
We made a trip to McClain’s for some of their famous cookies.
A birthday is never complete without a glorious birthday cake! We made a three tier, almond cake from scratch. I frosted it with pink, almond frosting and used some of the techniques I learned at a cake decorating class last winter. I then decorated it with a cluster of fresh fruit and fresh roses. Instead of candles, we found the number “80” in small sparklers. I think Grammy and my aunts really enjoyed their special day!
