The Paint Mines Interpretive Park is off the beaten path, but worth the effort to find. In El Paso County, near Calhan, Colorado, the Paint Mines are named for their colorful clays that were collected by the native Americans to make paint. Brightly colored bands, caused by oxidized iron compounds, are found in varying amounts throughout the many different layers of clay. As if hand-painted these towering giants of are quite the sight to see and are photogenic. Extending our trip a bit was definitely worth it.
